Yesterday, at home, I turned on my Kindle 3's Wifi to download the new book/s I've purchased (for free) but it wouldn't detect my Wifi router. :(

I tried to rescan to no avail. I thought I might have set the SSID broadcast to DISABLED on the router, so I manually configured my Kindle's wifi. No dice.

Today it connected just fine to my office router and to the popular mall's free wifi.

When I got home, it still wouldn't even detect my home wifi router.

The solution that worked was this: Reboot the router.

I'm excited to replace my Nuvi 255W! At first I was planning on getting a Nuvi 855W because it's one of the cheaper models that support preloaded routes. Then discovered that it's no longer listed in the current model list at garmin's website, so I looked for the cheapest one that's still listed there, and found out that a refurbished Nuvi 1450 is just a buck more expensive than a refurbished 855W! And it has a larger screen (though its battery holds up for only up to 3 hours, an hour less than my 255W) to boot!

But as the days went on and I kept searching and researching, I found out that Amazon is selling brand new 1450 units for $133, about 33 or 34 bucks more than refurbished ones. I decided to buy peace of mind for 33 bucks. :D

Here's some information about the 1400 series that's going to prove useful (most esp. the 1-sec track recording feature):

I just got my Nuvi 1460 and I have in my internal memory (in the /.System folder) my Thailand map as gmapprom.img, MSM-MySinG v3.09 as gmapprom1.img and Masmap Tiles and MFM v091019 as gmapsupp.img in two separate SD cards.

Then I created a folder /map and put in it Australia.img and Korea.img. When I located the /map folder in the SD card, it did not work. Then I tried the internal memory and put the /map folder in the .System folder and then the /Garmin folder as a sub-folder but both did not work either. Finally, I moved the /map folder to the root directory of the internal memory and the Australian and Korean maps were available for selection. This is a really neat feature.

The v2.10 firmware solved the incompatibility issue with cgpsMapper compiled maps.

The only things I find annoying (so far) are:

1. The touch screen is very insensitive compared to my Nuvi 200 and it will be a challenge trying to make changes while driving.

2. The only British TTS voice is Daniel. I prefer a female voice and there is no non-TTS British voice. I don't like Daniel murdering Jalan Tanjung Tokong as Jalan Tanjung Terkerng. Tanjung Bungah became Tanjung Bang Gah. Strangely Jalan Oldham was pronounced as Jalan O_L_D_H_A_M and Jalan Sg Kelian became Jalan S_G Kelian. Mappers will have to make the appropriate changes to the naming of roads.

3. The Autozoom is annoying because it does not return to the set zoom level as my Nuvi 200 does. I was happy with the autozoom in the Nuvi 200 but the N1460 always returns to its preset 300m.

4. I found that getting into PC Mode is mode difficult and complex than the Nuvi 2xx. In the Nuvi 2xx, you just plug the USB cable in while the unit is off and it will automatically switch on and go into PC Mode. With the Nuvi 1460, you have to switch on without the cable and let it boot up until it reaches the Where To? screen and the simulator must be off before you plug in the USB cable, then only will it get into PC Mode. However, the difference is if you plug in like you do for the Nuvi 2xx, the USB connection is recognised as external power so you can avoid using the internal battery and navigate with it connected to your PC.

1-sec tracking is available but cannot be activated through the Where Am I? screen (Easter Egg method). You can however activate it by touching the speedometer for about 10 seconds (remember the v3.4 firmware of the Nuvi 2xx?) then a Diagnostic Page appears. Touch the Diagnostic Logging option and you will get the Logging Control screen with the Start Recoding and Start Playback buttons. The logs are stored in the /debug folder in the internal memory.

Satellite lock is very fast. Accuracy improves to 4 metres (so far experienced) with WAAS selected. It was 6 metres when Normal was selected.

One more thing, I can see custom POIs displayed (without labels) in the Navigation map (if you like that). Strange thing is Favorites POIs are seen without the label (the Nuvi 200 shows both the icon and label).

Another weird windows xp behavior: for some reason, I couldn't access the Windows Clipboard -- no copy, cut, paste -- on my WinXP desktop at the office. I thought mysql-front was the culprit.

I found some suggestions on the net, so I tried to run the clipboard viewer (clipbrd.exe). It also couldn't access the system clipboard!

Then I ran into this, and I'd like to duplicate his post here for posterity (and this will also serve as a backup of his post):

Many users often complain to their system adminstrator that their clipboard is not working and they are unable to do copy/paste operations and it is the task of sys admins to break their head to find out the reason. Dear sysadmin...no more you need to do that. I came across a good tool which can help you to solve this problem.

This problem generally occurs when a process locks clipboard for reading and writting and didn't release it properly. Clipboard will function normally after killing that process. The tool (GetOpenClipboardWindow) will help you to identify the culprit process. Download this tool now and share it with users.

From my experience, I can say that mostly mstsc.exe is the process which blocks the clipboard. The reason I assume here is simple because it dealts with clipboard of connected computer and your computer.

Charging History:

1. Dec. 18, 2010 - 2 days after receiving it with ~50% charge remaining. Of course, I had to tinker with it all the time, testing all features - Wifi, Text-to-speech, music player, internet browser.

2. Dec. 26, 2010 - One week in my hands and I've already loaded the Sambuhay missalettes for the Misa De Gallo masses, as well as some Sundays into January. Still playing around with it.

3. Jan. 31, 2011 - Yes, > 1 month, but of course, I would only turn Wifi on every morning at home/office, a few times at SM (to no avail - the login page won't allow me to log in. :( ). No music playing, no T-T-S. Only a few sessions at night.

4. Feb. 22, 2011 - around 5 hours charging time (started at 11pm, woke up before 6am and it was fully charged. Usage: almost daily Wi-fi just to download news, got to read a little bit of "My Horizontal Life" by Chelsea Handler, finally finished "Duma Key" by Stephen King. Started reading "What's Science Ever Done For Us?"

I've finally given in. No, make that, I finally can afford it. Heh.

So last November 2010, I decided to ask permission from my wife, like I always do before purchasing gadgets, to buy myself a Kindle 3. And she'd lovingly replied, "Okay, happy birthday!" :D

See, ever since I read about the e-ink technology -- this was even before they've successfully made it commercial -- I've always wanted an e-book reader.

All the planets were in alignment -- a relative's son (let's call him "DH") was in the U.S. at the time, my wife gave her blessing, we had the budget, we had the means (internet access, credit card). All was a go.

So on the last few days of November, off to amazon.com I went, and lo and behold, the site mentioned that the Christmas shopping season was well on its way, and I'd have to wait at least two (2) weeks for the unit to be delivered (!!!). I told DH that he wouldn't have to bring me home a Kindle because his flight was scheduled for Dec. 14.

Good thing that after a few hours, Jing saw my sad status update on Facebook and pointed me to Amazon's Kindle 3 entry that said, "ONE DAY SHIPPING". HURRAY!!!

I hastily contacted DH and told him the good news (bad news for him, eh? :D ) and to make the long story short, by Dec. 16, 7:30pm I was holding my Kindle 3 in my hands. Aaaaahhhh... it was heaven!

Samsung Omnia Pro B7610

It's been 5 days after I installed the Giorgio Armani ROM by daskalos. So far, so good. I've encountered 2 coma's which were obviously caused by locking the device while Opera was still cleaning up the RAM, but just a few minutes ago, it wouldn't wake up again (3rd coma), even though I did not use Opera at all today. It might be due to a game or two that I installed just several minutes before the discovery of the 3rd coma. Will observe the games further.

When I poked the reset button, it booted just fine to 7% battery charge (It's been around 2 full days plus 8 hours since it was last charged (technically, since it was first used the morning after a previous night's full charge (Saturday evening charge, Sunday morning 6am first use).

Changes I loved:

Quicker contact search -- upon entering Samsung Phonebook, I can type letters and it will start searching matching names. With 6.5, I need to press the SEARCH button first before typing.

Changes I hated:

The Wi-Fi radio would occasionally NOT TURN ON, as if the transmitter got disconnected from the electronics :(
Sometimes the unit will not wake up from LOCKED state, and I need to soft-reset it by poking the reset button on the side. I am convinced, after reading this link, that Opera is the culprit.

Last week, after I charged the phone while tethered via USB-cable to my laptop almost all day, I went to the mall, and I couldn't make the Wi-Fi activate! After soft-resetting it 9 times (!!!) I eventually got to make it activate.

Then I read yesterday from Modaco that one user was loving the Giorgio Armani ROM on his B7610 because the Wi-Fi wasn't dying anymore. He mentioned that he was having Wi-Fi issues in ALL JC2 ROMs, but I think the issue was with WinMo 6.5.5 (and possible 6.5.3), because the GA B7620 ROM was based on 6.5 JC2, and so far, so good, I've downgraded my PDA ROM with it. :)

But now I have to press the Search button when selecting contacts. :(

Oh, and the Opera comatose problem is still here. :(

Garmin Nuvi 255W Recalibration

Looks like Garmin committed a big boo-boo. In the owner's manual (http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/nuvi205_OwnersManual.pdf), the instructions to recalibrate are:

1. Turn off the nuvi.

2. Turn on the nuvi and hold the Power key to the left for about 30 seconds until the calibration screen appears (white screen with "Press dot").

I followed it, tried 4 or 5 times even though my fingers were already hurting from holding the power button to the left for 30 to 60 seconds each time. No dice.

I found another one from http://www.sharc.net/discus/messages/6/77.html?1236709210:

Nuvi 2xx Series: Slide the on/off power switch to the left and hold until you see the calibration screen.

Nuvi 7xx Series: Touch the screen anywhere and keep your finger there while moving the on/off switch to left (don't wait for Garmin logo to come up) and then quickly moving the switch the right (lock position). After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

However, someone posted on this last page that the 7xx series instruction set that worked for his 255W, but he had to touch and hold at the upper left corner. I followed suit, and after more than 30 seconds, still nothing! But when I removed my finger from the screen, voila! The calibration screen appeared!

Here's the sequence of the dots that needed to be pressed as I remember:

Lower Left
Top Center
Mid Right
Top Right
Lower Center
Mid Left

So, to summarize:

Turn off the Nuvi 255W.
Touch and hold the upper left corner of the screen.
While holding your finger at the said screen corner, slide the power switch to the left to turn the unit on, and quickly lock the touchscreen by sliding the power switch to the right even before the GARMIN logo appears.
After a few seconds, release your finger from the screen.
Press the dots in sequence.

Finally, it rained!

Wow, it's been a year!

Since my last post, that is. Hmmm... looks like I stopped blogging here since Life kinda took a vacation when my father passed away two (2) days after my last post.

Today is the first-year anniversary of his death.

Remembering him, let me post this SMS message from our parish priest, Rev. Fr. Roger Yambao. He wrote:

"Merry Christmas. What gift shall we give Jesus tomorrow?" This was the text of tang Vic last year to me before Christmas. Iya pala idaun ne ing bie na kang Jesus. Great is this brother! A man of God and of the people. Remember him in his coming home today to our Creator.

php-mysql problem gives birth to Bill Viewer

3 days after discovering I broke our web server's php-mysql functionality by fixing it (groan), I finally finished my Bill Viewer program.

It allows the user to view all bills of any customer and quickly copy to the clipboard the VAT and UC details of an individual bill or a range of bills. There is an option to sort the details by month or by bill type.

Now I'm planning on including the ability to PREVIEW and PRINT any bill, but perhaps I'll do that in BCMS first (Ledger module).

Mouth Sores

A doctor friend of mine told me about a remedy for mouth sores ("singaw" or "lasu"):

benadryl syrup 30ml.
2x 500mg tetracycline capsule dissolve in 30ml water
daktarin or daktacort oral gel, 1/4 or 1/2 tspn, dissolve in 30ml water

Mix them all together, you get a 90ml solution.

Gargle it 30ml 3x a day (so 1 set will last only 1 day).

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage

How can a couple prevent adultery? Dr. Willard Harley in his book His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage provides some answers. He has
found that marriages that fail to meet a spouse's needs are more vulnerable to an extramarital affair.
Often the failure of men and women to meet each other's needs is due to a lack of knowledge rather than a selfish unwillingness to be considerate.
Meeting these needs is critically important because in marriages that fail to meet needs, it is striking and alarming how consistently married people seek to
satisfy their unmet needs through an extramarital affair. If any of a spouse's five basic needs goes unmet, that spouse becomes vulnerable to the
temptation of an affair.

First, let's look at the five needs of a wife. The first need is for affection. To most women affection symbolizes security, protection, comfort, and
approval. When a husband shows his wife affection, he sends the following messages: (1) I'll take care of you and protect you; (2) I'm concerned about the problems you face, and I am with you; (3) I think you've done a good job, and I'm so proud of you.

Men need to understand how strongly women need these affirmations. For the typical wife, there can hardly be enough of them. A hug can communicate all of the affirmations of the previous paragraph. But, affection
can be shown in many ways such as: kisses, cards, flowers, dinners out, opening the car door, holding hands, walks after dinner, back rubs, phone
calls…there are a thousand ways to say "I love you." From a woman's point of view, affection is the essential cement of her relationship with a man.

The second need is conversation. Wives need their husbands to talk to them and to listen to them; they need lots of two-way conversation. In their dating
life prior to marriage, most couples spent time showing each other affection and talking. This shouldn't be dropped after the wedding. When two people get married, each partner has a right to expect the same loving care and attention that prevailed during courtship to continue after the wedding. The
man who takes time to talk to a woman will have an inside track to her heart.

The third need is honesty and openness. A wife needs to trust her husband totally. A sense of security is the common thread woven through all of a woman's five basic needs. If a husband does not keep up honest and open communication with his wife, he undermines her trust and eventually destroys her security. To feel secure, a wife must trust her husband to give her accurate information about his past, the present, and the future. If she can't trust the signals he sends, she has no foundation on which to build a solid
relationship. Instead of adjusting to him, she always feels off balance; instead of growing toward him, she grows away from him.

Financial commitment is a fourth need a wife experiences. She needs enough money to live comfortably: she needs financial support. No matter how successful a career a woman might have, she usually wants her husband to earn enough money to allow her to feel supported and to feel cared for.

The fifth need is family commitment. A wife needs her husband to be a good father and have a family commitment. The vast majority of women who get married have a powerful instinct to create a home and have children. Above all, wives want their husbands to take a leadership role in the family and to commit themselves to the moral and educational development of their children.

Preventing Adultery: His Needs
Now, let's look at the five needs husbands have. The first is sexual fulfillment . The typical wife doesn't understand her husband's deep need for sex anymore than the typical husband understands his wife's deep need for affection. But these two ingredients can work very closely together in a happy, fulfilled marriage. Sex can come naturally and often, if there is enough
affection.

The second need for a man is recreational companionship. He needs her to be his playmate. It is not uncommon for women, when they are single, to join
men in pursuing their interests. They find themselves hunting, fishing, playing football, and watching sports and movies they would never have chosen on
their own.

After marriage wives often try to interest their husbands in activities more to their own liking. If their attempts fail, they may encourage their husbands
to continue their recreational activities without them. But this option is very dangerous to a marriage, because men place surprising importance on having
their wives as recreational companions. Among the five basic male needs, spending recreational time with his wife is second only to sex for the typical husband.

A husband's third need is an attractive spouse. A man needs a wife who looks good to him. Dr. Harley states that in sexual relationships most men find it nearly impossible to appreciate a woman for her inner qualities alone--there must be more. A man's need for physical attractiveness in a mate is profound.

The fourth need for a man is domestic support. He needs peace and quiet. So deep is a husband's need for domestic support from his wife that he often
fantasizes about how she will greet him lovingly and pleasantly at the door, about well-behaved children who likewise act glad to see him and welcome him to the comfort of a well-maintained home.

The fantasy continues as his wife urges him to sit down and relax before taking part in a tasty dinner.Later the family goes out for an evening stroll, and he returns to put the children to bed with no hassle or fuss. Then he and his wife relax, talk together, and perhaps watch a little television until they
retire at a reasonable hour to love each other. Wives may chuckle at this scenario, but this vision is quite common in the fantasy lives of many men. The male need for his wife to "take care of things"--especially him--is widespread, persistent, and deep.

The fifth need is admiration. He needs her to be proud of him. Wives need to learn how to express the admiration they already feel for their husbands
instead of pressuring them to greater achievements. Honest admiration is a great motivator for men. When a woman tells a man she thinks he's wonderful, that inspires him to achieve more. He sees himself capable
of handling new responsibilities and perfecting skills far above those of his present level.

If any of a spouse's five basic needs go unmet, that person becomes vulnerable to the temptation of an affair. Therefore, the best way to prevent adultery is to meet the needs of your spouse.

Open it using your fav zip program (I used 7-Zip)
Change install.rdf and update 2.0+ to 3.0+
Open chrome/tvtpwm.jar
Edit content/tvtpwm.js and replace window.addEventListener("load", onLoad, true); with following:

Things To Check and Do Weekly

Things to check:

Radiator coolant. Check the plastic overflow bottle, attached by a hose to the radiator. if the level is below the Full mark, add water and antifreeze in equal amounts. If the level keeps dropping, check for leaks.

Oil Level. park the car on level ground wait a few minutes. Then pull out and wipe the dipstick and reinsert it. If the level is below the Add line, add enough oil to bring the level to Full mark. Don't overfill.

Things to do:

Keep the body clean. Dirt and pollutants are tough on paint. Wash the car every week, using enough water to avoid scratching the paint. Hose out the fender wells and undercarriage with a strong spray to dislodge accumulated dirt and road salt, which can cause corrosion. When water beads on the body panels become larger than a quarter, wax the body to protect the paint from tree sap, bird droppings and other damaging dirt.

Things to Check Monthly

Things to check:

Tire pressure. Check with an accurate gauge when the tires are cold. (Don't trust the air-pump gauges at service stations, as they tend to be very inaccurate.) See your car owner's manual or label in the glove compartment or on the driver's doorpost for recommended pressures. And don't forget the spare.

Automatic transmission fluid. Check the fluid level and color, using the transmission dipstick (See the owner's manual for details.) If the level is low, add fluid to between the Add and Full marks. If the fluid is brown or black or smells burnt, change the fluid and filter. If the fluid is sickly white or pale, the transmission oil-cooler may need repair.

Power steering fluid. check the level with the dipstick (usually attached to the fluid reservoir cap). If the level is low, top it up and have the system checked for leaks.

Brake fluid. Check the level in the master cylinder. (Wipe the cap clean before removing it.) If the fluid level is low, top it up and have the system checked for leaks.

Battery. On a low-maintenance battery, pry off the covers or unscrew the caps. If necessary, add distilled water. If the battery has an "eye", check its color. If the eye is green or blue, the battery is OK. If it's black, have the battery tested and charged. If it's pale or yellow, replace the battery.

Things To Check and Do at Each Oil Change

Tires. Check for cuts and bulges, signs of an imminent blowout. Don't worry about fine surface cracks.

Differential fluid. On rear-wheel-drive cars, remove the plug in the differential and feel for fluid with your little finger. If you don't feel any, add fluid until you can and have the system checked.

Breakdowns Can Be Very Annoying

Don't let a highway breakdown ruin your trip to balik kampung. Be prepared, to help increase your chances of arriving on time and safe and sound. Preventive maintenance is a must. A well maintained vehicle is more enjoyable to drive, will last longer, and should command a higher resale price.

Read your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedules.

Engine Performance -- Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Replace dirty filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.).

Fuel -- Note that a gas tank that is kept filled helps keep moisture from forming.

Oil -- Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual -- more often if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System -- The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. Never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.

Windshield Wipers -- Replace old blades. U know lah here in malaysia it rains lembu and gajah even worse than raining cats and dogs..

Battery -- The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly. Note that removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles, so be sure to check your manual.

Lights -- Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System -- Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires -- Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires "cool down" before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don't forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

I've had enough!!!

This particular workstation cannot stay up for 3 full days!! :-(

When it had only 512MB RAM, I timed it and it couldn't last more than 18hours. Now that it has 2GB RAM, it can stay up for more than 48 hours. I haven't timed it on 2GB RAM yet.

I am pretty sure that this problem is related to VIATXT's SUPERLOAD software. This software was written on VS.net. I know this for a fact, because I've already set up dozens of computers with the same configuration, and without this SUPERLOAD program, they do not suffer crashes like this one does. AFAIK, these crashes occur EVEN AFTER SuperLoad has closed.

Yes! I managed to do it in less than an hour:

I improved getvat2.php to display additional fields at the top of the page: METER #, CONSUMER CLASS, ADDRESS and removed the first bill's details, since they will be included in the table below anyway.

The table now has no more SYSLOSS, AGRA, TRAM VAT amounts, and has followed Gina's Report format:

Load Center and Pole Numbers

FVV told Rico that in order to minimize human errors in encoding Load Center and Pole Numbers, we should input them during creation of the customer account, and not when the meter has been installed already.

Makes sense, but it will require A LOT of changes in the system -- in the program and in the reports -- not to mention the shift in encoding practice...

Initially, I mentioned that we should just transfer the fields from the meter page/table to the consumer master page/table, but we will not be able to track the pole and LC histories. So now I'm thinking of transferring the 2 fields to a NEW table, while Rico suggests that we just get them transferred to the consumer_connection table, which I think will take up more server disk space than necessary, as it will entail recording of the 2 fields every time there's a Reco and Disco for a customer where there's no change in LC and Pole.

Update, Apr. 29, 2008:

I've decided to create a separate table, despite it having similar (redundant) fields like modified_by, created_modified, current_status...

Why? Because there are times when the Eng'g. Dept. has to replace rotten poles and there may be METERS that will have to be removed and subsequently put back. We will have no individual job orders per customer then.

This morning, Rose complained that she couldn't check her email.

I thought it was merely a proxy problem, but changing the proxy settings didn't matter.

Then Gina said she couldn't load up BCMS program.

While I was checking the server with a lot of "what if" scenarios on my mind, Mike announced that his network connection is "UNPLUGGED."

That's when I checked the switch, and voila, 3 of the 4 groups of 4 ports each were down.

Good thing I haven't installed the old Cnet 100Mbps switch at LH sub-office yet. I transferred all our network cables to this old unit so that Dinah can have the Linksys replaced, since it has warranty coverage up to Sept. 2008. Whew.

I'll be requesting for a spare unit ASAP, though.

It was about time I grew tired of all the editing I have to do with all the mistakes in posting payments. Every time Agnes calls me to adjust batches of O.R. numbers, I have had to:

1. Load up the SQL front end.
2. Open my database of commands.
3. Open the commands table.
4. Select the second-to-last record for the template.
5. Copy the template's starting O.R.# to the clipboard.
6. Ask Agnes what the starting O.R.# to edit is.
7. Search and replace.
8. Copy the template's ending O.R.# to the clipboard.
9. Ask Agnes what the ending O.R.# to edit is.
10. Search and replace.
11. Copy the template's date of payment to the clipboard.
12. Ask Agnes what the posting date to edit is.
13. Search and replace.
14. Ask Agnes what to edit (teller_id, payment_date, O.R.#'s)
15. If O.R.#'s, switch to the command prompt or load one up.
16. Calculate the difference between correct and wrong starting O.R.#'s.

Uploading meter reading data

Last week, I modified the MR Uploading module to include a check for the area's existence before the uploading proper started. In my blog entry, I prayed that I didn't introduce a bug "this time" but, guess what... (altogether now...) I DID!!! :-(

My latest quick fix failed to take Power Bills into consideration. Since Power Bills were read not by area but by reading day, the uploading process stops dead on its tracks at the area check.

I fixed it immediately.

New thinkpad joins domain

I got my new company-issued Lenovo Thinkpad X61 7676A14 last Friday! Woot!

It's pre-loaded with "Vuisit-a" Vista Business, even though the sticker on the keyboard says Vista Basic. Nice, huh. Another pleasant surprise is that it's a Centrino Pro (I thought it was Centrino Duo only, not knowing of the existence of the Pro)! Centrino Pro is targeted at businesses. It's essentially the new Centrino Duo platform with an extra Intel Active Management chip. What this chip does is allow remote management and enhanced security features, even without an operating system.

Today I got the first chance to make it a domain member, but I kept getting "incorrect password" errors, despite disabling the usual "requiresign" etc... features. So I googled and found, among other links, this link.

BCMS: Bug Fix

My additional code for automatically Unvalidating zero and negative consumptions bit me.

I should've never touched the VALIDATED field if the computed consumption is negative (zero is now acceptable as valid), so I corrected it not to touch the VALIDATED field if the computed consumption is NOT negative. Otherwise, UNVALIDATE it.

I also corrected the Rover UPLOAD module to check for a matching area_id where searching for the account_no_id of the current consumer whose reading is being uploaded. I did this because some old account numbers in FB were equivalent to SF old account numbers when the hyphens are removed, and this screws up the upload process for some accounts.

I hope I didn't introduce new bugs this time.

BCMS: Data integrity fix

DPP and ELP approached me and reported that there was a NEGATIVE BILL last month. ELP was very quick to point out that i should put in code that checks for negative consumptions during bill computation.

My first reaction was unfavorable; I told him the flow of the system should be sufficient in preventing such problems. After some more thought, though, I realized that it's not a bad idea to do that as a "last line of defense" against this particular problem.

I then proceeded to search for bugs. During this search, I found out that the account is a mother meter and quickly realized that it was already PreVALIDATED by the program and retained its validation status even after the encoder has subtracted the sub-meters' consumptions. So I also added code that re-validates the reading after said input.

1. Following the method used for archiving the artran table, we will also archive these tables alongside artran_history to a new database called "history":

b. consumer_bill_details - Monthly (leave the previous month's data) - indexed on bill_no_id
c. bill_detailed_summarized - Monthly (leave the previous month's data) - indexed on account_no_id, bill_no
d. meter_reading - Monthly (leave the previous month's data)? - indexed on meter_reading_id, account_no_id, billing_month, actual_billing_month
e. payment - Monthly (leave the previous month's data) - indexed on account_no_id, ornumber, payment_date+teller_id

BCMS: Sacrificial Lamb

I heavily sacrified myself yesterday...

We were in a meeting to resolve the issues of LC's (load centers) servicing consumers in multiple areas. This problem surfaced because we wanted to be able to track consumers using feeders and load centers they are connected to, but our old feeder records are already several-years outdated (long ago, there were only 7 feeders but now there are 14 or 15), and this entails the need to update (and correct mistakes in) consumer records.

Several issues (some only related) came up:

1. RAJE (outsourced meter readers) will have to identify consumers which are recorded in the wrong areas (just a side problem).

2. Using new feeder-area groupings will be chaotic on RAJE's part (scheduling, etc.)

3. To achieve a proper hierarchical structure (Feeder - Area -LC - Meter), all individual LC's will have to be confined to one area each... an ENORMOUS task, to say the least, for the Engineering Department.

So I asked Eng'r. Lapuz if he needs to subdivide Feeders into areas, and when he said NO, I proposed that we:

1. Retain old feeder-area assignments as Revenue Areas, not Engineering Areas. The old FEEDER numbers will be renamed REVENUE GROUP numbers.

2. The FRANCHISE code at the beginning of each consumer's account number will be replaced with the FEEDER code/number they are serviced by/connected to.

The benefits of this scheme are:

1. NO CHANGES in RAJE's scheduling. They don't need to do any additional work!

2. NO TRANSFERRING of meters from LC to LC. They don't need to do any additional work!

3. NO DRASTIC CHANGES in Billing Reports and other stuff that refer to the old FEEDER-AREA numbers. (Note: Will assign modifications of report files to Rico.)

4. NO UNNECESSARY waste of paper (reports that fit 7/8 pages don't need to become 15 pages because of summarization by FEEDER).

The disadvantages:

1. SUBSTANTIALLY MORE WORK FOR moi!!! Aaaaaarrrgggghhh.... :

a. I need to modify the program to refer to old feeder numbers as revenue groups (I need to educate employees on referring to them from now on as such).

b. I need to restructure some tables in the database, which means I need to make sure the changes occur simultaneously at LH and RBM (2 San Fernando payment centers). Florida can be modified the day after.

c. For (b) to occur, I will have to create a temporary database for practice, along with a new set of code, just in case I commit a major blunder and have to revert to the old code.

Notes on 1.b.:
(i) Looks like uploading data from LH and RBM doesn't touch the consumer_master and consumer_meter_info tables, so I won't have to do a synchronized alteration of the table structures.

(ii) consumer_master: feeder_id and meter_information_id0 are both int(10) unsigned. Change these to transformer_id and pole_id, respectively. these have matching types. The feeder_id should then be picked up from the transformer_lup table. transformer here means LC (?)

MySQL InnoDB tablespace reclamation

Been having "table is full" and disk full errors again, so I decided to prune the data.

The usual steps were taken, following the procedures in this site: http://www.saturn.in/gpl/mysql.html

But before following those steps, ...
1. I made sure my latest backup of the main database was complete.
a. copied bill_settings, datafile_settings, and system_settings tables to my own database.
2. I dropped the main database.
3. Followed the instructions mentioned above.
4. Restored the 3 copied tables from my database because they're essential to the restore utility program.
5. Used "restore utility.exe" program to restore the tables.

For this housecleaning instance, I also used "remove zero from artran" program to transfer the fully-paid bills to the artran history table (this took more than 3 hours!!!). While doing this, I made a temporary database on the other server and uploaded last night's backup of artran and artran_vat. I created a table from the still unpaid bills (select account_no_id,applytodocno,sum(docamt) amount,docdate from artran group by account_no_id,applytodocno having amount <> 0.00).

Then I "inner joined" the resulting table to artran_vat and selected matching vat data into an outfile. I'm curious, though, why artran_vat shrunk from 476MB to 5.5MB (??!!). Only 61898 records?!?! With an average of 5 VAT charges per bill, those are only about 12,000 bills unpaid! What the ?!?!

Anyway, I'm rechecking now.

Found the problem. Looks like either a file system or a MyISAM limit was hit when I uploaded the latest artran_vat data to the new server.

Now, from an erroneous 5.5MB outfile, I have a 17MB one. And this time I'm sure the data is complete. Heh.

Addendum: Need to erase the BINLOGs after uploading the data.

BCMS improvement, plus possible bug

First, the good news. DPP requested me to include the Suffix in the Search window when looking for a name in the Ledger module. I did it one better: I included the middle name, too.

Now for the bad news. Agnes complained that the Miscellaneous Report-Final VAT Report is inconsistent with the "FINAL VAT Detailed Collection report per pay type". Particularly with the Oct. 2, 2007 Final VAT remittance of Account # 32780 (168 Victoria Square). I was at a loss why the report was not seeing the 2 payment details for that single O.R., and had spent several minutes looking for the problem on the query statement when I noticed my Payment Editor that the bill_no_id fields for the 2 "invisible" details was too high (>7,000,000) particularly because the bill_no was for the month of August 2007 and the bill_no_id for the 3rd detail was only in the 2,200,000 range and that was for Sept 2007! So I merely corrected the bill_no_id and the bill_date (which contained the "current" date for that posting - 10/02/2007 - instead of the real bill_date which is 08/14/2007).

I'll have to do experiments on this to catch the bug. Low priority, though.

Oct. 25, 2007:
Transaction Logging: Added more descriptive data to the transaction logging of some reports, particularly the Detailed Collection Reports. The need arose when Agnes complained that her "same day" printout of Obet's collection report summary was changed when she reprinted it about a week after. I had to dig deep into the transaction_logs to do some forensic investigation and concluded that she inadventently CHECKED the "Use existing VAT summary" checkbox so that Obet's last few receipts were not summarized, even if she denied having checked it when I mentioned it to her before my investigation.

Ledger Module:
Adjusted some object placements in the Ledger Module so that the PRINT button, which has been fixed to be a MOMENTARY switch several weeks ago, will not disappear when resizing the BCMS window. I also incorporated some changes that Rico needed to identify the exact payment type and A/R type in artran.

Meter Reading (manual input): I've also corrected the code to fetch a consumer's name to place a space between the firstname and the middle initial. Long overdue.

Street Lights Settings: I've incorporated the Street Lights Report into the module. It's "by individual account" only. I also created a table for the City/Municipal street lights so that I don't have to do it in a spreadsheet every time they re-count the bulbs per barangay.

Oct. 26, 2007:
Bill Cancellation (and Unbill): Finally!!! I managed to modify these processes to include the corresponding VAT and UC charges. This is a major accomplishment, administrative-wise.
I didn't realize that when I modified the "Unbill" process, I failed to add a criterion to the UC detection to include the Unbundled UC charges, so they were still being incorrectly posted.

Oct. 30, 2007:
Billing Statements: Printed out statements of accounts for 3 big customers for BIR-auditing purposes. CFC discovered that since we went "Unbundled" the TIN #'s for the EVAT were removed from the text, so I now have to reformat 4 reports on 4 separate computers (well, 3 now, as I've already finished Mike's copy). I hope Gina's PC will accept Mike's copy without need for adjustments since they have the same printer model.

Consumer Management: I let Gina watch me as I edited an account which she isn't supposed to be able to modify. I hope she gets the workaround.

I'll post more when I recall them.

iPod working again

Thank God, my iPod is working again!

I thought I would open up the case, since I've got "nothing to lose" cuz it's been displaying the SAD iPOD icon for about 2 weeks already...

To my surprise, a piece of broken copper connector fell out as one side of the cover was lifted.

While I was at it, I also reseated the ribbon cables on the boards and hard drive.

After this, the iPod started working properly again! No problems whatsoever!

That piece of copper might have been shorting out some circuits inside the iPod that's why the hangs were intermittent!

Oh well, at least now it's working again...

I'm still at a loss if I will take the Fortigate 60 for our Main Office. Marvin Lim of Comclark has managed to convince me to go for their wireless link by lowering the MSF's. But still, I would like to use Endian for the firewalls and the VPN, because they are Linux-based and I am more familiar with Linux than FreeBSD on which pfSense is based. I cannot find a way to make EFW to connect to the Fortigate 100A demo unit thru IPSEC. However, Endian Firewall Appliance seems too expensive for our needs. :-(

At my favorite auction site, I won a scanner last week, and a bottle of perfume today! Plus, I have a new digital camera, which I got just last night! I went to SM and I bought a neoprene carrying case just enough to house the camera unit (a Samsung S730) and 12 extra AA batteries (of course, I bought 8 more Ni-MH AA's to augment my 4 batteries). I also put in a 2GB 150x Apacer SD Card. Man, is it fast!!! :-)

My wife's cousin Bernard was kind enough to promise to give me his 4 Duracell rechargeable AA's before he goes back to the U.S. of A.

I forgot when I finished the BILL RANGE feature in the Bill Posting module, but yes, I've already finished it. I think that was last week or the week before.

I might remove the Sequence Number Range frame I've included (not yet functional), but that'll have to wait.

I think I will have to replace the prior button type of the PRINT button in the Ledger module so that the user will not have to click back on the previously used button whenever they changed customers after printing.

Oh, man!

I've been spending lots of precious time manually matching RAJE's data with PRESCO's. I started this on Friday morning, and passed it on to Rico, who passed it on to their 2 OJT's. Now I'm posting this at home, after a few hours of more manual matching! The OJT's didn't seem to get much work done. :-(

Okay, just to vent out my frustration with RAJE, especially with Mariliz, who should've known better and asked for Account Numbers in the first place:

I used VLOOKUP() functions to search for account numbers in the PRESCO data where the name matches RAJE's. Problem is, Mariliz just typed into the computer whatever RAJE's meter readers wrote by hand, so there were a lot of TYPO's, both in names and serial numbers, hence, a lot of "#N/A" values found. These "N/A's" are the ones we need to scrutinize. Some are simple enough to find, like missing MIDDLE INITIALs. Others are a little tougher, like misspelled surnames and/or first names. A little bit tougher still are those with two first names and/or full names (!).

I also included another VLOOKUP() for the serial number just to verify that the account number found was "legitimate." I had to do this because there were multiple records with the same registered names. Same problem with TYPO's here.

This is the manual matching procedure:

I find the next record with no matching account number (#N/A). I press CTRL-PGDN to go to the PRESCO sheet, press CTRL-F to open the Find dialog box, type in the surname, press ENTER, and if there's a matching surname, i look for the first one with a matching first name. If still not found, I look for a similarly spelled surname, and so on. If the surname search fails, I search for a matching FIRST NAME with a SIMILAR-SOUNDING SURNAME, and this usually is the last step. If still not found, I mark it so.

Here are a few samples of matches I made, after using much effort:

BCMS User-Friendliness Updates

After the last time I made changes and improvements to BCMS, I've done the following:

1. Fixed the "not unpressed buttons" issue on the Consumer Ledger and Consumption buttons in the Ledger module.

2. Gave access to Disconnection clerk to the overpayment application module because she needs to see which (and how many) months the receivables were for. Initially, she only wanted me to force the Ledger tab in the Ledger module to display the last entry, but I was not able to find a way, at first.

3. In relation to #2, found the way to force the listviews on the Ledger module to ensure that the last item is visible [listview.listitems(listview.listiems.count-1).ensurevisible or some such hocus-pocus].

4. Switched the listviews in the Ledger module not to HIDE the SELECTION highlight when out of focus.

5. Added Syntax-error Prevention code on Bill Posting module when searching for areas.

6. Pressing ENTER on Area field will now erase the contents, if it already has been looked up prior.

7. Added TOTALs to the financial columns in Overpayment module.

8. Switched reports on Rose's new PC to the Epson FX-1170 driver.

Whew! Finally!!! The Overpayment module now takes into account the amount of VAT and UC to apply from bill to bill! Woohoo!!!

In the process, I eliminated some more primitive coding by streamlining again; specifically, using the iif(), min(), and max() functions. The latter 2 I had to build functions for. No big deal.

Recent changes to BCMS:

1. Added another report (and corresponding button) - Daily Check Payment Report - to the Teller Collection report module.

2. Modified Bill Posting to include 3 options: Late bills only, Current bills only, All Bills.

3. Independent module: Discovered that sometimes, payment_vat_summary doesn't tally with payment_details_vat. I don't know how previous instances (I'm sure they exist) escaped Agnes, so I included pvs in the checking of the vatdisc program. I'm planning on integrating this, including the corrections in the report generating module, into BCMS. Well, at least the pvs data can be automatically corrected if that's the only problem. I can't automate correction of the pdv data if they don't tally with the pd data.

4. Discovered that the VAT_ME_EC variable was not being reset when a teller presses the NEW button in the Teller module. Fixed.

5. Allowed full application of over payments (now includes VAT and UC) but I haven't perfected this yet. Will update on this later, when I finish it.

I installed a Linksys WAP54G (firmware in the 3.x series) and I managed to connect 2 N93's and RCD's IBM Thinkpad R50E, which I used to test how far the connection can go. I placed the AP near the corner of the Gigabit switch, to which I connected it, and I could get a connection from my cubicle [3 concrete walls!], although a tad intermittent, to JTL's doorway. Whew! I've just finished 40 copies. While I was printing the 40 cover pages on the glossy photo paper I bought at SM Dept. Store last night, I had someone buy the plastic binders and I punched the holes on the pages.

As usual, I had to cut the papers containing the body of the report on the right side because they're in letter size while the cover pages are A4. Then I had to cut the cover pages on the bottom side because they're more than 11 inches long.

All in all, I did an almost perfect job in the binding process. I didn't ruin any pages today! Hurray!!! The only mistake I made was on 3 sets of Financial statements and I remedied it by cutting the mispunched side instead of the right side. :-)
